What's Your Mountain, Boston?

Are Wednesdays really so tough?

Well, yes, they can be.

Here, though, is to keeping things in perspective. For more than a month now, Patch and Grape-Nuts have teamed up to present stories about your neighbors - neighbors who have faced challenges that would seem insurmountable to many of us.

But not to the people we've featured in this series, Journeys.

Not surprisingly, the stories have generated dozens of comments on Patch and on Facebook: "Great story...""Thanks for sharing..." "So wonderfully inspiring..."

And, so, here they are again. Great stories shared to inspire. Take a look at what these people have faced. Then click on the story to see their responses. And feel better about your tough Wednesday.

Local Woman Helps Run Girls Soccer Club in Haiti

For Taryn Silver, what began as a 10-day trip to Haiti in 2011 turned into a new home and close to 50 new friends.

A former Sharon resident, Silver helps run the Association Sportives des Jeunes Filles de Fond des Blancs (The Sports Association of Young Women of Fond des Blancs), a girls soccer club in the rural town of Fond-des-Blancs, about 70 miles west of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.

The club offers an opportunity that Haitian women rarely get due to lack of funding, time and also due to the cultural roles Haitian men and women often play.

Cleanup Organizer Sees a Future of Smaller Footprints

Pat Conaway is "kind of a nut" about the environment, and when he retired from teaching in 2008, it didn't take long for him to find a number of productive ways to spend his time. He now sees hope in the young people who help him clean trails, waterways and roadways.

"I wanted to get people fired up about the environment, to try to encourage citizens to get involved locally," he said.

Home Sales for the Love of Rescued Animals

Three years ago while on the Internet, Weston real estate agent Leslie Mann read a story on the Internet that horrified her: A female pit bull-type dog named Turtle had been abandoned in a wooded area in the middle of winter.

Badly injured, Turtle showed signs of being a bait dog, one used to test the fighting instinct of a potential fight dog.

The Animal Rescue League of Boston stepped in to help, and nursed Turtle back to health through six months of treatment at Tufts Veterinary Hospital in Walpole. The story was enough to inspire Mann to raise about $6,000 for Turtle's treatment.

And even though Turtle is now on the mend, Mann and her husband, both agents with Gibson Sotheby's Realty in Weston, are donating $1,000 to the ARL from every home sale they make in the area.

Death of Abandoned Dog Spurs Legislation Effort

One resident's efforts to find justice for a lab that died after being abandoned in a foreclosed property resulted with the filing of a bill to protect animals in similar situations.

"This is the bill that I want," said Lyn Gorka, a local real estate agent and animal rights advocate, who had spoken out for such a bill after being moved by the story of the 2-year-old Phantom that died after being abandoned in a foreclosed apartment. "I have been praying for this bill for two years and I am very, very happy. I want this law passed. I don’t want this to happen to any other dogs."

14 Good Jobs That Don't Require a College Degree

Learn more about good jobs that don't require a college degree.

The following story was provided by AOLJobs.com

By Dan Fastenberg

As tough as the labor market is, college grads still have an easier time than those with only a high school degree. In February, college graduates had an unemployment rate of 3.8 percent—compared to a staggering 11 percent for those with only a high school diploma. Still, a new study released Tuesday shows that there are some good careers out there for those who lack a four-year degree.

If you’re looking for a job in Falmouth, check out our jobs page.

CareerCast.com, the job-portal site, compiled a list of 14 good careers that require only a high school degree (though some require additional training). The site used a variety of criteria to assess the quality of the careers, including salary, how physically demanding the positions are, and emotional factors such as the fields' competitiveness, potential hazards and stress. Those with the lowest score received the highest ranking. CareerCast.com also looked at the potential income and employment growth for the decade ending in 2020, using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Overall, the 14 jobs for high school grads offer an average median salary of $41,307, which means the group is in line with the overall average salary for all Americans. The highest-paying job on the list offers a median salary of $77,000 a year. But several of the careers on CareerCast's list offer incomes of around $20,000.

More: 10 Things HR Won't Tell You About Your Resume

The list includes careers that have long been popular trades for Americans who don't attend college. But CareerCast also identified tech positions that are in high demand, and often don't require a degree, just skill. Still, expect to be paid less without a college degree. "Business owners don't always want to pay market rate if you don't have a degree," Sol Hershkowitz, of New York-based Viasoft.com, told CareerCast, according to its news release.

Harvey is up for adoption by People for Cats.

People for Cats provided the following.

Harvey is a young white cat with gray tabby spots. Only about 1 1/2 years old, he is long and slender.

He lived in a multi-cat household and would be a good cat for a family with children. This young boy is quiet but friendly and his good nature ensures he will be a wonderful companion pet for any type of family.

After Earth, in theaters now, promises to be the movie event of the summer – and how could it not be, with Will Smith and his son Jaden starring as stranded space rangers—one still in training—on the unrecognizable planet Earth 1,000 years in the future.

All grown up since the last time he shared the screen with his dad in The Pursuit of Happyness, Jaden plays a teenager named Kitai Raige, who reaches out to the father he never knew, a legendary ranger named Cypher, for a little guidance. An interplanetary mission meant to be a bonding experience ends in a crash that injures Cypher, leaving Kitai alone on the ground to survive with some help from dad. Some lessons, like how to escape a blood-thirsty alien and act like a man, are best left to dad to teach, and make you realize every day is father’s day.

Directed and co-written by M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth offers a classic coming-of-age tale with mind-blowing special effects and acting to match. So grab your cozy sweatshirt and prepare for the ultimate father-son adventure!

State House News Service Weekly Roundup: Death With Benefits

Massachusetts State House

The specter of deceased citizens collecting welfare benefits haunted the marbled halls of the State House this week as Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray tied up the loose ends dangling on his six-and-a-half years with the Patrick administration and Attorney General Martha Coakley sued the Obama administration for allegedly putting fishermen on death row.

Other than that, the arrival of steamy days in Boston ushered in a post-Memorial Day and budget week lull at the State House with the governor out of town, politicos watching two special elections and committees plodding forward with bill hearings while lawmakers wait for word from on high about their next big votes.

Congressman Ed Markey and Republican Gabriel Gomez also continued sniping from a distance in the lead-up to next week's first debate, with First Lady Michelle Obama and song lady Carole King both in Massachusetts to campaign for Markey.

Auditor Suzanne Bump released a blockbuster audit of the Department of Transitional Assistance alleging $15 million in questionable spending on welfare benefits, including 1,164 cases totaling $2.4 million in benefits flowing to enrollees after they were reported deceased or to recipients using a dead person's Social Security number.

If Auditor Suzanne Bump was seeking to make a name for herself as a nonpartisan watchdog of the public purse, she hit the jackpot with this one. The report played perfectly into the hands of Republicans and conservative Democrats eager to jump on any morsel of evidence that welfare benefits are being abused.

What Bump might not have been expecting, however, was the tone of the pushback from Gov. Deval Patrick and his administration who had little positive to say about his former labor secretary's work. And it's not the first time the accuracy of Bump's auditing has been questioned.

Patrick told the Herald he found it "infuriating" that Bump's office had only released the details on 178 cases reviewed in the audit, of which his team found that only 17 were problematic. The spin required walking a fine line: Yes, one case of fraud is too many, but a 99.9 percent success rate ain't bad either.

Asked whether the Democrat was doing a good job in her role as auditor, Patrick said, "I think it's too soon to say." Bump has been auditor for two and a half years.

Unlike other audits, this one isn't likely to fade soon and will feed into the debate when Senate President Therese Murray files her comprehensive welfare reform legislation, expected soon.

Republicans and some House Democrats were frustrated by the Senate leadership's decision to push off action on welfare system reforms to improve oversight during their budget debate last week.

But Sen. Murray dropped snippets throughout the week of what will likely be included in her looming welfare bill, including the addition of photo identification to EBT cards that was approved in the House budget.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo still wants welfare reform addressed in some way in the budget, which as of Thursday sits before a conference committee led by Sen. Stephen Brewer and Rep. Brian Dempsey.

Both those men also returned to the work of settling differences between the branches over tax increases, and until the transportation financing details are finalized Transportation Secretary Richard Davey indicated the administration would hold off on deciding whether to send half of the $300 million Chapter 90 funding approved for local road repairs. The first half of those funds is marked for distribution after a borrowing terms bill passes.

Patrick spent most of the week in western Massachusetts on the commencement and farm circuit, save for a brief appearance on Beacon Hill Wednesday just in case the Governor's Council deadlocked on his latest nominee to the Worcester District Court bench and his presence was needed to break the tie.

Turns out, the trip was not needed. Councilor Michael Albano didn't show up and the council voted 4-3 to reject attorney Stephen Anderson's nomination based on his lack of criminal court experience and the suggestion that he lied on his application about the circumstances surrounding his professional break from his former law partners.

It was an apropos end to Lt. Gov. Murray's tenure chairing the frequently tumultuous council. And as the duty of presiding over the body shifts to Patrick, the governor will have to be even more careful with his judicial nominations knowing tie votes can no longer be broken without a lieutenant to cast the ninth vote. That's not a common occurrence, but Patrick faces a new dynamic in which four councilors voting together can reject any of his nominees to the bench over his final 18 months in office.

Murray filled his final week in state government with events handing over the responsibilities that have consumed his days since first elected in 2006 to other members of the administration and U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy, who takes over as chair of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Advisory Council.

Spending his last weekday in office in Westfield announcing new farm grants, Murray stood next to Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Richard Sullivan, a former mayor of Westfield and now a stand-in for Murray as the most likely member of the administration to run for governor when Patrick's term ends in 2014.

Sullivan was also on Fish Pier Thursday when Attorney General Martha Coakley announced she would be suing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in federal court to reverse new regulations that cut fishermen's catch limits by up to 77 percent on some species. Coakley called the rules a "death penalty on the fishing industry in Massachusetts as we know it."

Rep. Linda Dorcena Forry cruised past her Republican challenger to become the newest state senator representing South Boston, Dorchester and Mattapan, while attorney Jay Livingstone easily topped former Grossman political hand Josh Dawson in the special Democratic primary to fill former Rep. Marty Walz's seat based in Beacon Hill and the Back Bay.

Forry's victory closed the book on one special election, while creating the need for yet another to fill her seat in the House. The number of special legislative elections ongoing now stands at four, with three completed this year.

STORY OF THE WEEK: The Tim Murray chapter on Beacon Hill ends; Auditor Suzanne Bump inserts herself into simmering debate on welfare reform.
