This Week is National EMS Week (May 19-25)
This week -- May 19 to 25 -- is National EMS Week and the theme is "EMS: One Mission. One Team."
In 1968, President Gerald Ford signed the first EMS Week proclamation, designating a time for the nation to celebrate the emergency medical technician paramedic as well as an opportunity to educate the public about the critical role of EMS in the community, according to EMS.gov.
May 22 has been designated as Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day, according to emsweekideas.org.
Every day our local, state and national EMS respond to crisis situations. Recently, Boston's EMS was in the spotlight because of last month's bombings; and today, Emergency Medical Service personnel in Moore, Oklahoma, are in the national spotlight as they deal with the aftermath of a tornado that killed 51 people (at least 20 of them children), according to The Huffington Post.
This year’s theme for EMS week is "EMS: one mission, one team." One month ago, during the tragic events of the Boston Marathon bombings, we clearly demonstrated the impact of this collaborative effort. Massachusetts’ EMS professionals showed the world that we provide the highest level of cooperation, necessary hospital throughput capacity and life-saving emergency medical care, as one team upholding its critical mission.

Measure to Pay for Turbine Removal Fails
Nearly 41 percent of registered voters turned out for Tuesday’s election, according to the Cape Cod Times.
Question number 2 would have approved a proposition two and a half override to pay for removing the turbines, repaying grants received to build them and other costs related to halting turbine operation.
The Cape Cod Times reports that 6,001 residents cast votes against Question 2 and 2,940 residents voted in favor of funding turbine removal.
Incumbent Mary Pat Flynn and Rebecca Moffitt won the two available seats on the Board of Selectmen beating out Sheryl Kozens-Long, Marc Finneran and David Moriarty.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray to Resign
UPDATE, 10:45 a.m.: Boston.com has updated their original post, reporting that Murray is anticipated to resign next month from according to a top administration official.
ORIGINAL STORY: Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray will be resigning Wednesday, according to CBS Boston.
CBS Boston reported sources saying Murray will leave to become the head of his hometown Worcester Chamber of Commerce, a position that pays over $200,000 a year.
Murray announced earlier this year he would not run for governor in 2014.
Boston.com reports there is no mechanism by which the state Constitution allows for the replacement of the lieutenant governor, meaning Gov. Deval Patrick will be without one until he leaves office in January 2015.
As a result, Boston.com reported the next in line of succession for governor is Secretary of State William Galvin.
Murray's tenure as lieutenant governor has been marked with controversy.Boston.com's report Wednesday mentioned Murray 2011 car crash in a state vehicle as well as ties to former Chelsea Housing Authority director Michael McLaughlin, who has pleaded guilty to felony charges related to concealing his salary.
Patch will have more on this story as it becomes available.
Murray to Resign June 2; Patrick Calls Him 'Outstanding Partner'
Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said none of the controversies that have dogged him during his tenure on Beacon Hill contributed to his decision to announce his resignation.
In a press conference at the State House Wednesday, Murray said his final day on the job will be June 2. The next day he will take over as president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce where his salary will reportedly be around $200,000.
In January, Murray said he had no intention of running for governor when Gov. Deval Patrick's term expires in January 2015.
"This has been a very difficult but empowering decision," Murray said. "It has been an honor to serve as lieutenant governor."
Patrick called Murray an "outstanding partner" during his time in the corner office. Among the accomplishments Patrick touted were his work with the homeless and on domestic violence as well as working closely with government leaders in cities and towns.
Murray is also currently the head of the National Lieutenant Governors Association.
"He was here, in every way, for the right reasons," Patrick said. "This is no small loss to our team or for me."
Indeed, there will be no replacement for Murray. Under the current state Constitution there is no mechanism for replacing the lieutenant governor if they leave office before their term ends.
Murray said the current investigation into former Chelsea Housing Authority director Michael McLaughlin, who has pleaded guilty to felony charges related to concealing his salary and has ties to Murray, had nothing to do with his decision to resign.
"This was a unique and special opportunity that was not going to be there in January 2015," Murray said. "It builds on everything that I've been working on."
Murray said he had no concerns about a possible indictment coming his way in connection with the McLaughlin investigation.
Murray was also involved in an early-morning car crash while driving a state vehicle in 2011.
He added he was not "actively pursuing" any job when he was approached about the Worcester job and at first was not interested before changing his mind after discussing the idea with his family.
Murray would not rule out a run for higher political office at some point in the future.
"We'll see," Murray said. "I've got young kids right now ... It takes a toll, (campaigns) are non-stop, frenetic events."
Patrick was asked if the resignation reinforced the idea his administration is entering a "lame duck" phase.
"You judge us over the next 18 months and see if we slow down," Patrick said.
"I believe we will show you that we don't intend to."
Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)
Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.
1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try these marinade recipe ideas.
2. Set your grill to medium heat. It’s so easy to overcook meat, especially when you’re entertaining. “Grilling over medium heat is key because the beef will be browned perfectly and cooked evenly,” says Dave Zino, Executive Chef and culinary spokesperson for the National Cattleman’s Beef Association. The same goes for chicken.
3. Dessert? Try Grilled Fruit. It's inexpensive and unexpected. “I love to grill fruit like watermelon, pears and pineapple. It really doesn't get any easier or healthier than that. If you need something to cool off with, serve the grilled fruit with a scoop of frozen yogurt or ice cream,” Zino recommends.
4. Choose poultry instead of beef. Browne is a fan of “beer-butt chicken”, placing an entire chicken on the grill with an open can of beer inserted into it. “The beer steams the flesh and produces very moist and succulent meat.” He also likes turkey dogs and turkey bacon as a healthier choice for his popular “bacon wrapped cheese hot dogs” for kids. (There is no recipe -- you just wrap the hotdog in cheese, and wrap cooked bacon around it. Rolls and condiments are optional.)
5. Or choose fish instead of beef. Browne likes to grill salmon on disposable cedar planks, which he soaks first so that the salmon remains moist while cooking.
6. Make your own coleslaw and baked beans. If you’ve got the time and the inclination, this is a big money-saver. We’re partial to Paula Deen’s coleslaw recipe and this root beer baked bean recipe from Aarti Sequeira of Food Network fame. And you can find healthy recipes in Browne’s Big Book Of Barbeque Sides.
7. Buy meat on sale or in bulk. Rick Browne says don’t be afraid to buy meat in the sale section of the meat display. “You can always take it to the store butcher to check out if you aren’t sure and rewrap.” Plus buying in bulk from Costco or another retailer is a great way to save money if you’re feeding a crowd.
8. Yes, you do want leftovers. If you get a great deal on a package of steaks, grill them all up, says Zino. “I slice that steak up the next day and wrap it in a burrito for a protein-rich breakfast or serve it on a salad for a nice light steak salad with extra veggies and vinaigrette."

Should the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station be Shut Down?
Cape Downwinders, a group opposed to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, wrote a citizens advisory question calling for the plant’s closure.
14 Cape towns have voted to support the group and its efforts, according to the Cape Cod Times.
Falmouth voted to support the effort Tuesday; Barnstable voters will take up the question during a fall election.
The group is now ready to take their concerns to the top.
Co-founder Diane Turco told the Cape Cod Times they plan to ask Governor Patrick to urge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to shut down the plant.
Among other issues, the group believes the plant stores an unsafe amount of spent fuel rods and is concerned about the lack of evacuation plan for Cape Cod in the event of a disaster.
We want to know what you think, are you concerned about the safety of the plant? Tell us in the comment section below.
Motorcyclists: "Pipe Down" in Falmouth, Cops Warn
If you're planning to take your motorcycle out this weekend, Falmouth Police Capt. Douglas DeCosta has an advisory for you:
The Falmouth Police Department is using Memorial Day weekend to remind motorists of the ongoing Vehicle Noise Abatement Education Campaign—Operation Pipe Down.
The campaign includes tips on how to avoid a ticket in Falmouth: Muffle the Noise, Shift to Silence, and Turn Down the Sound.
If an operator does not call attention to themselves with unreasonable noise, then they won’t get a ticket from the Falmouth Police Department.
As motorists cross through the intersection of Palmer Avenue (Route 28) and Jones Road in the center of town they will be greeted with an LED Highway Display sign bearing the words “Reduce Vehicle Noise, Avoid a Ticket.”
Officers will also be patrolling the town, including the area of the sign, for operators who have chosen not to “reduce the noise.”
Operation Pipe Down’s primary goal is education; however officers will address enforcement issues if necessary.
The outreach includes an informational brochure and website information at www.falmouthpolice.us.

Where's the Cheapest Gas in the Falmouth Area?
Click here for a full-screen view of the gas price map. If you don't see a map of our local area, click the magnifying glass in the upper right to enter your address.
Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said.
"Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011.
In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to produce as much gas, which has pushed prices to all-time highs.
"If you can gas up today to prepare for your Memorial Day driving, do so," said Chuck Bonner, the lead analyst for GasPredictor.com.
"Retail gas prices should have stabilized in the Midwest, but will continue rising on the East Coast, West Coast, and Gulf Coast," Bonner said. "Some areas will see fairly dramatic increases like the double-digit price hikes that most Midwest cities have already seen in the past week."
Average gas prices shot up 44 cents a gallon in Minnesota and 36 cents a gallon in Iowa over the past week, Green said. Motorists in the Twin Cities area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul were paying as much as $4.33 per gallon, according to GasBuddy.com.
AAA had predicted a nationwide low of $3.20-$3.40 per gallon during the summer, but Green said the current spike in prices means gas may never be that cheap this summer.
"This is one of the more volatile Memorial Day weekends that I can remember," Patrick DeHaan, Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy.com, told Patch.
While you can't control the price at the pump, you might be able to control how much gas your car burns. AAA offered these tips:
- Properly inflate your tires
- Avoid flooring the accelerator and slamming on the brakes
- Drive the speed limit
- Keep up-to-date on routine vehicle maintenance
