The John Wesley United Methodist Church (JWUMC) and the Falmouth Police Department joined together to hold the gun buyback program. The event exchanged unwanted guns for local grocery store gift cards on Saturday February 2.
The day was a success with residents turning in 206 firearms, according to the Enterprise.
The effort was in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary school shootings.
Tiffany Van Mooy, a member at JWUMC, presented the idea for the buyback to Rev. Calhoun after reading about similar programs in other states, such as California and New Jersey.
Edward Dunne, the Falmouth Police Chief told the Enterprise the community will be safer because of the buyback.
During the event people dropped off unwanted guns at JWUMC where police officers assisted in receiving, transporting, and disposing of the firearms. Residents that turned in BB or pellet guns received a $25 gift card, residents that turned in a semiautomatic shotgun received $100 gift card, and for a rifle or assault weapon they received a $200 gift card.
