Marine Corps Sgt. Brian J. Nelson, a Falmouth High School graduate, was presented with the Purple Heart at Falmouth High School Wednesday afternoon.
An explosive device in Iraq injured Sergeant Nelson in 2006. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces of the U.S. who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy, and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action. It is specifically a combat decoration.
The ceremony was emceed by Andy Dufresne of Falmouth, past president and long-time member and of the Falmouth Veterans Council and a Korean War veteran with the U.S. Navy.
“I am delighted that we have this opportunity to recognize and honor the brave service of one of our native sons in a very positive atmosphere. We appreciate the Falmouth Public Schools for hosting this wonderful event,” Dufresne said.
Sgt. Nelson is the son of Ellen M. Nelson of North Falmouth and the late Master Sgt. David A. Nelson, who was a member of the 102nd Fighter Wing, Otis Air National Guard Base.
Sergeant Nelson's personal awards include three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and the Combat Action Ribbon. He was recently selected to attend the Assessment and Selection Indoctrination Course for the Marine Corps Special Operations Command in January.
