While 10,000 runners prepared to hit the roads of Falmouth for Sunday’s annual road race, the weekend’s festivities kicked off on Saturday, August 11th with the 12th Annual SBLI Falmouth Recreation Family Fun Run, and an impressive showing by many Falmouth residents who reached the podium. (Winners listed below.)
More than 500 future world class runners – ranging in ages from three to 14 years – got their shot at the gold as they competed in various distance races, beginning with a 100-yard dash for children five and under, a 200-meter race for six- and seven-year-olds, 400 meters for eight- and nine-year-olds, 800 meters for ten- and eleven-year-olds, and one mile for twelve– to fourteen-year-olds. Every participant shined in the annual event, taking home an official race t-shirt, a medal, and a “fantasy finish line photo.”
In addition, SBLI presented the Cape Cod Center for Women of North Falmouth with SBLI’s “No Nonsense Achievement Award” for their ongoing work to assist and support battered women and their children in leaving abusive environments. The Cape Cod Center for Women provides women and their children a safe place to stay, as well as a fully connected network of community support while they transition to independent living. The award includes a $2,000 donation. (Photo of presentation included)
The race, formerly the SBLI Junior Falmouth Road Race, marks the twelfth year that SBLI has sponsored the children’s event, established with SBLI’s sponsorship of the Falmouth Road Race from 2001-2005.
